The Desire for More
Is it a need or a want?
One is rooted in survival and the other one is rooted in freedom. There’s a huge distinction.
When you’re in survival mode, your choices are motivated by the need to get out of your current situation. Maybe your home is flooding, or you’re on the cusp of losing your home - in those cases, you are literally running away from danger in order to continue existing.
The other motivation is one that is driven by the pure joy and pleasure that you find in the actual act of exploring. For instance you hike mountains in hopes to see a better view, or you go canoe camping to see new natural landscapes. You long to go further just for the sake of going further.
And there’s nothing wrong with wanting to expand your perceivable horizon. There is nothing wrong with the desire to see and experience more than what you have.
“More” is not a bad thing.
If you’re reading this right now, it’s likely that you have enough. You have the basic needs for survival like food, shelter, and water. However, we’re not meant to merely survive.
Yes, our genetics say that we are animals at the end of the day, but there’s something more in our programming. Something that wants to become more complex - more intelligent and expansive.
Don’t feel guilty for wanting more than what you have.
Don’t feel guilty for wanting more money, or wanting to travel and see beyond your home.
So go and expand, explore, and build.
Build your business. Go traveling, go deeper in your meditation practice, take psychedelics to expand your mind and see the world in another way. Do it because you love to explore.
And while you’re exploring, remember you chose this. You wanted an adventure. Because the spirit of play called out to you. There are so many other ways this could be more easy and more comfortable, but those are not the “more”s that you chose.
You’re not running away, you’re running toward something.
Just remember to be mindful. Trust your inner knowing that you know how to navigate your desire for “more” with balance, love, and grace.
